The Buffalo County Highway Committee has recommended Highway O in rural Cochrane, Wis., be designated a Class B roadway with lower weight limits if sand trucks are permitted to use it.
The panel's objective is to discourage use of County Highway O as a short cut for trucks to run from Waumandee to State Highway 35 at Cochrane.
If designated Class B, the highway could be limited to 48,000-pound gross weight with exemption for trucking activity from gravel quarries already located along Highway O.
Badger Bluff Sands, LLC, of Buffalo City, Wis., is seeking a conditional-use zoning permit for a frac-sand mining operation in the town of Waumandee. Badger Bluff Sands says a second primary route would go south on State Highway 35 and 54 to Winona.
The company seeks a permit to truck 100 loads of sand per day when operating. The company wants to mine and truck a half-million tons of sand annually.
