Organizers say they've collected more than 500 signatures that support beekeeping in the City of Eau Claire.
Currently, the city doesn't have an ordinance that addresses beekeeping, although there are beehives on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus. Nicole Sorenson brought the bees to campus and tells WQOW-TV that there have been no reports of problems and that the hives are a great teaching tool.
Beekeeping has drawn a lot of attention recently because of the colony collapse disorder which has greatly reduced the bee population in the United States. Organizers say that urban beekeeping can help combat the problem.
The organization, Save the Bees, wants Eau Claire to adopt an ordinance similar to Madison's local law which took effect last year. That ordinance requires that hives be 25 feet from neighboring homes.....
