Buildings to be Demolished

Three of the downtown Winona buildings destroyed by the September 13th fire are scheduled to come down this week.
Winona Building Official Steve Carson confirmed buildings that housed the Brosnahan Law Office, the Winona Islamic Center, and Sole Sport will all be demolished starting this week.

Carson said when the debris is removed the the lots will be filled and leveled and left vacant for the time being. He said the lots can be used for new buildings but so far the city has not received any plans for any of the three businesses to rebuild.

The building at the corner of Third and Center Streets that housed the Blooming Grounds Coffee House and two floors of apartments will remain, along with the adjacent Pretty Things store. That building sustained mostly smoke and water damage from the fire.

The city issued a building permit last week to the owners of  the Blooming Grounds building, Off Center Partners, for remodeling of three apartments costing $50,000.

The Brosnahan Law Office has relocated to the Home Federal Building one block away and Sole Sport relocated to a building directly across the street.
The Islamic Center, where the fire originated, has not announced its plans but has been meeting at another location.

Carson said A-N-F Consulting in Rochester is overseeing the demolition.
