Lock and Dam Closing

Commercial shipping on the Mississippi River in the Winona area will be shut down soon.

The U-S Army Corps of Engineers' St. Paul District says Lock and Dam Number Eight located south of La Crosse will be closed for the season on Monday, December 2nd.

The lock will be dewatered during the winter for renovation and repair work.

Dewatering of the locks occurs about once every 15 to 20 years. The last time Lock Eight was dewatered was 1992.

A spokesman at Lock and Dam 5-A at Fountain City says the closure means all towboats and barges must be below Lock and Dam Eight prior to  December 2nd.

Locks above Lock and Dam Eight will remain open for local traffic only but generally they all close in early December.

Lock and Dam Eight is scheduled to be reopened on March 14th.
