Winona State Quarterback Earns Big NSIC Honor
Winona State freshman quarterback Jack Nelson has been named the NSIC’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Nelson threw for 2,715 yards and 25 touchdowns in ten games as true freshman after stepping into the starting lineup in the second game of the season. Nelson threw for 423 yards against Southwest Minnesota State, the second most in school history. He also threw five touchdown passes against Wayne State and he threw for more than 300 yards four times. He finished with the fourth most passing yards in a season, despite not playing in the first game.
Eleven Warriors earned all-conference honors, led by junior offensive lineman Vance Ross who was the only WSU player named to the first team. Tight end Alex Jensen, center Richard Lilla, wide receiver Josh Mikes, running back Chichi Ojika and linebackers Collin Corcoran, Ryan Gerts and Morgan Weaver were all named second team all-conference. Defensive linemen Parker Detjen and Tyler Kluber were given honorable mention all-conference along with wide receiver and punt returner Alan May.
Winona State went 6-5 this season, the 17th straight winning season under head coach Tom Sawyer.
