Frac Sand Rules



The state is coming to the aid of Minnesota communities that have struggled with how to regulate the boom in mining for silica, or frack,  sand, which oil and gas drillers use for hydraulic fracturing.
  
The Minnesota Environmental Quality Board Friday will unveil a set of draft model standards that are meant to provide counties, cities and townships a toolbox of approaches they can tailor for their own needs.

The standards are one of the main steps the 2013 legislative session ordered to address the environmental and health effects of silica sand mining.

Winona County has one frack sand mine in operation currently and that is located in Saratoga Township.....
