With just a few days left before the new Affordable Health Care law goes into effect on January First, Winona County is still dealing with processing applications and training its staff.
Coordinator Karen Moore said the county is still training its staff on processing applications and has just received clearance from the state to hire two more workers.
Moore said the county currently does not have any navigators who would assist the public in signing up for the MnSure program because they don't have the capacity to handle them yet.
The county has received some 256 applications so far but has been unable to determine yet how many of the applicants qualify for MnSURE and how many may qualify for other state health programs such as MnCARE.
Moore said training information from the state has been less than adequate for county staff so far. But the staff is doing what the state's allowing them to do at this time.
