2014 will bring a change to the Winona County Sheriff's Search Operations Assistance and Rescue team, also known as SOAR.

Ray Sylvester of Rollingstone will become the new president of the 12-member volunteer squad that assists the Sheriff's Department when needed.

Sylvester will take over for current president Greg Lemmer of Winona who has served as president for about the last ten years. Lemmer will remain with the team.

Elected as the new vice president earlier this month was Angie Hundt who will take over for John Erickson.

The SOAR Team is called out in many different situations involving such things as missing person searches, rescues, and other emergencies.

The 12 current members are unpaid and undergo special training twice a year. The team is looking for additional members.

Qualifications include being at least 21 years old and passing a background check. Lemmer calls it a good stepping stone to get into the law enforcement field, especially for college students interested in a criminal justice career.

If you are interested in serving on the Winona County SOAR team contact Sheriff Dave Brand at the Law Enforcement Center at 457-6368.
