WSU Student Killed

Winona State University reports that a student, identified as Ellen Marie Ahmann, died Tuesday night in an automobile crash near La Crosse.

The 21-year-old Ahmann was from Woodbury, Minnesota,  had enrolled at WSU in fall 2010, and was a finance major.

Emergency workers in La Crosse recovered Ahmann's body from a car that broke through the ice on a creek near the Mississippi River.

A bus driver called dispatchers Wednesday about 1:30 a.m. when he noticed tire tracks leaving the street and heading over a bank toward Swift Creek.

The vehicle plunged down a 40-foot embankment but the ice didn't immediately break. The vehicle headed a little south on the ice before breaking through into the water.

Rescue divers found the vehicle submerged in 6 to 8 feet of water.

Counseling and support services are being made available to all members of the university community who may be affected by this loss.
