Winona County is encouraging residents to test their homes for radon during January, which Governor Mark Dayton has declared as "Radon Action Month."
Winona County has a limited number of short term radon testing kits available for free at the County' Environmental Service Office at 225 West Second Street. They are available between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday as supply lasts.
Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that occurs naturally in Minnesota soils. Testing is the only way for homeowners to know if they have the gas in their residences.
Radon is the leading environmental cause of cancer deaths in the U-S and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
The best time to test is in the Winter, but testing can be done year around.
