County Past Due Accounts

Winona County Board members adopted a policy to allow the county finance director to clean up past due accounts that have been inactive for decades and are still on the county's books.

Finance Director Pat Moga said the Human Services Department alone has 5.6 million dollars in past due accounts and many of them are not collectible any more and should be written off.

Moga said 4.1 million dollars of the overdue accounts are over 90 days old.

County Administrator Duane Hebert said the overdue accounts have little impact on the county's budget.

The board voted 4-0 to approve the new account adjustment and write-off policy with Commissioner Greg Olson absent.

Moga will give the board quarterly updates on the collections with a review of the process in one year.
