Rail Safety

Following a request from Minnesota Senator Amy Klobachar,  the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation announced that it will hold a hearing on rail safety this Thursday, February 13th and Winona officials may be following it closely.

Earlier this month, Klobachar called for a comprehensive oversight hearing on freight rail safety in the wake of recent derailments in North Dakota and Canada. The Commerce Committee hearing will focus on current challenges for passenger and freight rail as well as strategies for boosting rail safety in Minnesota and across the country.

Winona officials have long been concerned about the possibility of a hazardous spill in Winona through a derailment because the city is bysected by the Canadian Pacific tracks which run through residential areas.
