The Buffalo County Board voted 11 to 3 to raise the mining reclamation fee from $1,125 plus an additional $500 if a public hearing is requested on a mining reclamation plan.
County supervisors Mary Anne McMillan Urell of Buffalo, John Kriesel of Buffalo City and James Ziegeweid of Glencoe voted against the new fee plan. They argued for a more cost specific fee charged back to mines for services rendered.
Buffalo County has contracted a private engineer to review reclamation application plans to determine if proposals meet requirements of state and county regulations.
The county board also has an annual fee schedule for mining acreage that remains unclaimed, prices based on mining size with fees ranging from $175 for up to five acres and $870 for sites 51 acres or larger.
