The Lewiston City Council has begun looking at options to replace Police Chief Joe Hastings after the council accepted Hasting's resignation this week.
Hastings had been away from the job since December as an investigation
continued into allegations of illegal interception of oral communications. The investigation conducted by Olmsted County found no wrongdoing.
The Lewiston Journal reports current interim chief Troy Leibfried informed the council he was not able to continue full-time in the interim position for the long term.
The paper reports the council's policing option committee will consider several law enforcement.
One would be to maintain the department but change its structure pertaining to coverage and employment hours. Another is to contract with another law enforcement agency...and a third would be to eliminate the department and have the Winona County Sheriff's Department provide coverage.
The paper say Hastings will receive severance pay of just over $9,300.
