The Winona County Sheriff's Department says four horses and one dog were seized from a farm near Minneiska over the weekend in a case involving apparent animal neglect.
Chief Deputy Ron Ganrude said an officer was sent to the property along Hickory Lane Friday and discovered the animals outside with no apparent food and little water. Hay and dog food were left on the property at that time and were eagerly consumed by the animals.
A search warrant was served on the property Saturday but the owner was not there.
Ganrude said a veterinarian was summoned and determined the animals were not being properly fed and would continue to deteriorate if left there.
Authorities were unable to contact the owner until Sunday evening when a female came to the Law Enforcement Center.
The case is being reviewed for possible criminal charges by the county attorney's office.
