Congressman Tim Walz visited Winona Monday and met with city officials.
Mayor Mark Peterson says, with the recent incidents of oil spills around the country and in Canada, Walz wanted to discuss rail safety issues
Peterson says he told Walz Winona's heavy rail traffic means safety is a priority.
Peterson says Walz talked about efforts of the railroads and carriers are doing to better prevent accidents.
Peterson says several Mayors attended the meeting, including La Crosse and La Crescent, as well as area fire department officials.
Walz is a member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials. He says the subcommittee will hold a hearing Wednesday afternoon to review rail safety standards.
