The Winona County Sheriff's Department has received a $5,000 donation from a Lanesboro fishing tournament in memory of the three former Lanesboro residents who died when their vehicle plunged into the Mississippi River on January 5th in Winona.
Sheriff Dave Brand said eight fishing tournament committee members were on hand Wednesday night, along with the Lanesboro fire chief, at the Law Enforcement Center, along with the parents of the three male victims, to present the check which represented proceeds from annual fishng tournament last month.
Brand said the money will be used to begin a fund to raise enough money to purchase a new piece of equipment for the Winona County Dive Rescue Team.
Brand said the team wants to raise some $60,000 to purchase a special robotic camera to use in future searches for victims of drownings. He said the equipment will be made available to other law enforcement agencies too.
The three male victims all attended Lanesboro High School and were well known in the community.
They, along with the female driver of the vehicle, all died when the vehicle went off Huff Street into the river and broke through the ice.
Tournament proceeds are also being used to provide a college scholarship in each of the male victim's honor.......
