First Towboat

Still no sign of any towboats heading this far north to open the shipping season on the upper Mississippi River.

The towboat "Cooperative Venture" came as far north at Lock and Dam 14 in southern Iowa on Monday but dropped off nine barges and returned south.

The U-S Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to take a third survey of the ice depth on Lake Pepin Wednesday to help determine when towboats will try to make it through the lake to St. Paul

Two weeks ago the deepest ice was 30 inches thick just north of Reads Landing and was still about two feet thick at several other sites on the lake.

The Winona commercial harbor is still waiting its first towboat.
