Still no sign of any towboats heading up river to open the shipping season in the Winona area.
The closest tow was the John Lanning which passed through Lock and Dam Eight south of La Crosse Monday at 11:25 a.m. heading downriver.
The tow had dropped three barges off and then turned around and went back south.
The U-S Arm Corps of Engineers will makes it next survey of the ice on Lake Pepin Wednesday. A week ago the ice was still as deep as 22 inches just above Reads Landing. But that included 10 inches of solid ice and 12 inches of white ice, or ice with bubbles in it that was loosening up.
