Apple Cider Market

A fourth-generation La Crescent apple grower plans on planting old varieties of English apples on his family's land overlooking the Mississippi River to serve a revived market for hard cider.

Mitch Leidel, whose great-grandfather planted the first apple trees on the family's land, bought local apples last fall to produce the first batch of Leidel's Cider, which he will soon deliver to retail stores in the La Crescent and Twin Cities areas.

According to the Post-Bulletin, his family's orchards haven't been tended for a few years, and he is hoping to revive them by planting old varieties of English apples specifically to make cider.
