Winona State Softball Team Gets Big Doubleheader Sweep
The Winona State softball team swept a pair of games against NSIC leader Minnesota State-Mankato at Alumni Field Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors took the first game in a pitchers’ dual 2-1 in eight innings and then Winona State’s offense took off in the second game and they blasted the Mavericks 10-2 in five innings. The losses were the first conference losses of the season for the Mavericks and it stopped the Mavericks' 22-game winning streak.
Ashley Walker gave up just four hits and one unearned run in the first game to get the win. Jessica Kullmann hit a solo homerun in the fifth inning and then the Warriors got a walk-off RBI single by Allyson O’Herron in the eighth inning.
Kullmann hit another solo homerun in the second game while Morgan Lintz crushed a three-run bomb for Winona State. The Warriors had 12 hits in the second game and Brooke Piotrowski went 3 for 3 in the second game and scored 3 times. Hanna Lythberg gave up just six hits and one earned run to improve to 15-2 on the mound this season.
Winona State improves to 30-6 overall and 13-3 in league play and they are now just one game behind the Mavericks in the loss column.
