Winona Floodplain Management Ordinance
The city of Winona is currently working on updating the city's floodplain maps and have been discussing amendements to the Floodplain Management Ordinance.
City Planner, Mark Moeller, says city has almost completed work on proposed changes that would still use area flood maps from 1984 but would add areas annexed into the city since then.
The department is also proposing a new flood district for the recently annexed areas, so residents and information seekers can easily find flood-prone areas.
Moeller says the draft ordinance is being reviewed by the Minnesota DNR and the city is waiting on comments from that agency. He says the DNR will also be working on brand new floodplain maps but that seperate project will take up to a year to complete.
Moeller says once a final draft ordinance is prepared their will be public hearings at the Planning Commission and the City Council before any changes would be voted on. He says he expects the matter to be brought before the Planning Commission sometime in May.
