Flood Run

Local authorities report no incidents during the 49th Annual Spring Flood run on Saturday.
Both Sheriff Dave Brand and Police Chief Paul Bostrack reported the turnout of motorcycle riders was down this year.

The flood run has been used as an annual fundraiser for the Gillette Children's Hospital in the Twin Cities.

It commorates Winona's 1965 flood where the Mississippi River reached about 20 feet and flooded a large portion of Winona's downtown area.

Motorcyclists flocked to Winona that year to volunteer their assistance in sandbagging operations.

Winona has not had a serious flood threat from the river since the permanent dike system was completed in the mid-1980s.
