School Board-District Facilities
The Winona Area Public School Board Tuesday received their first update on a facilities work group's suggestions on the potential future use of district buildings, two of which include closing three operating schools.
Superintendent Scott Hannon told the board that the group, made up of parents, educators, and business and community leaders, broke up into 3 teams and each had their own suggestions.
Hannon says one team's option would put the 3rd and 4th grades in the Middle School, build a new K-2 elementary school and Jefferson, Madison and W-K would all close.
A second option would close the same three schools but turn Goodview into a pre-K through K school, the Middle School into a 1st through 6th grade school and the High School would then have 7th through 12th graders attending. The third option would move the 4th graders to the Middle School, add two new schools (one brand new, 1 renovated) and sell or re-purpose Madison and W-K.
Hannon says regardless of which option the board may prefer, with shrinking enrollment, a 3 to 5 year facilities plan needs to be figured out and adhered to.
There are no potential costs attached to the work group's suggestions and Hannon will work to bring back estimates to the board. The matter will be on the board's next meeting for further board discussion.
Board member Jay Kohner made a suggestion to hold a pair of public hearings for input before getting too far along in the process of making a decision.
