The Winona State softball team won four games on Saturday to win the NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Warriors had to do the hard way after losing in their first game of the NSIC Tournament on Thursday. Saturday they beat 25th ranked Augustana twice in a row to win the championship. Winona State beat Augustana 3-1 in the final game to clinch the title.
Jenny Nelson hit a two-run homerun in the first inning and Ashley Walker hit a RBI single in the fifth inning. Nelson hit a homerun in each of the final three games Saturday and she now has 17 on the season. Nelson also has the Winona State single season record for RBIs with 70, but she has just one more than teammate Morgan Lintz.
Hanna Lythberg was outstanding on the mound giving up one run and four hits while striking out eight.
Winona State beat Augustana 5-0 earlier on Saturday to force a winner-take-all championship game. Ashley Walker threw a two-hitter in the win.
Ashley Walker, Jenny Nelson, Morgan Lintz and Reed Karstens were all named to the all-tournament team.
Winona State improves to 46-7 and they have now likely wrapped up the number one seed in the Central Region tournament and home field advantage throughout the tournament. Winona State finished their NSIC schedule 20-11 and they are 23-20 overall. Winona State has now clinched their 32 consecutive winning season.
