The Mississippi River intersate bridge at Wabasha will get a new name after Red Wing DFL State Senator Matt Schmit successfully included a provision in a transportation policy bill that will rename the bridge the "Michael Duane Clickner Memorial Bridge."
The provision previously adopted by the Senate, was this week passed by both the Senate and House, and now is expected to be signed into law by Governor Mark Dayton.
Sergeant Clickner is believed to be the only casualty of the Vietnam War from Wabasha and many community members have been hoping to honor his sacrifice through a memorial bridge. The City of Wabasha recently passed a resolution supporting the effort.
Michael Clickner was a casualty of the Vietnam War on April 11, 1970 at the age of 21. He would have celebrated his 65th birthday this month. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal and two Vietnam Medals. He is also honored at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
