A group of 12 electric cooperatives, led by Tri County Electric in Rushford, have
banded together to acquire the service territory of Alliant Energy.
The group, called the Southern Minnesota Energy Cooperative, filed an application to merge with Alliant Energy on April 15th.
Tri-County Present and CEO Brian Krambeer says the Alliant territory stretches from Rushford across southern Minnesota to the Worthington area and is a natural expansion of Tri-County Electric.
Krambeer says the merger, if approved, will add 2,500 new customers for Tri-County Electric. Alliant's employees have all been offered jobs with the cooperative.
The regulatory process with the Minnesota Public Utility Commission is expected to take six to twelve months to complete.
