Jail Hires

Two more full-time jailer-dispatchers will be hired in the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department where short staffing has posed concerns in county jail operations.

The county's law enforcement committee said communication/correction officers were working 12-hour shifts and pulling extra duty on their off work days to keep the jail and dispatch center adequately staffed.

Buffalo County Sheriff Michael Schmidtknecht said state inspections of the county jail at Alma have routinely for years cited a shortage of jailer staffing and credited the department for managing while understaffed.
