The Fountain CIty police chief is warning residents to be careful about placing hazardous materials in the garbage following a scary incident that occurred on Wednesday.
Chief Jason Mork says he received a report from a garbage handler who observed what was believed to have been a suspicious material in the rear area of a garbage truck.
The employees believed it was a chemical reaction from an unknown substance. Turned out, after careful inspection, it was determined that a household chemical was not properly neutralized before disposal.
The Fountain City Fire Department was called to the scene and safely handled the material without incident.
Mork is reminding residents that common household hazardous chemicals require special disposal or they can put others at risk. Contact your waste management organization regarding proper disposal.
