River Search

Authorities were continuing their search Friday afternoon for an elderly man who fell into the Mississippi River from a canoe.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand said the man, believed to be 88 or 89 years old, was alone fishing near the Prairie Island spillway when he got to close and the churning water caused him to fall in.

Brand said no one witnessed the incident but a deputy saw the canoe in the water shortly afterward. Someone reported seeing the man swimming in the water before he disappeared.

The canoe, along with the man's fishing gear, and a life jacket were recovered.

Assisting at the scene were the Sheriff's Department's Dive Rescue Team, the Winona Fire Department, the Sheriff's Search Operation and Rescue Squad, the Boat Patrol and Goodview Police.

The man's name was not immediately released but Brand expects to release the name Saturday morning.
