Authorities continued their search Saturday for an elderly man who fell into the backwaters of the Mississippi River from a canoe.
Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand identified the victim as 88-year-old Robert Lester Duncanson of Stockton.
Brand said Duncanson was alone fishing near the Prairie Island spillway Friday morning when he got too close to the churning water which caused the canoe to flip over and Duncanson to fall into the water.
Brand said no one witnessed the incident but someone reported seeing the man swimming in the water before he disappeared.
The canoe, along with the Duncanson's fishing gear, and a life jacket were recovered.
Assisting at the scene were the Sheriff's Department's Dive Rescue Team, the Winona Fire Department, the Sheriff's Search Operation and Rescue Squad, the Boat Patrol and Goodview Police.
Brand said the crews resumed their search at 8:00 a.m. today.
Brand is also asking the public not to use the spillway boat landing to launch boats while the search continues. He is asking boaters to use a different launching area instead.
