Former Winona High Athlete Up For Big National Award

Former Winona High athlete Courtney Benson wrapped up her decorated collegiate gymnastics career this past spring and Benson is now up for a major national award.  Benson has been nominated as a candidate for the NCAA Woman of the Year award that honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
Benson graduated Hamline this spring as a Finance and Economics major with a 3.96 GPA and she was named to the Capital One Academic All-American first team for the second straight year.  She is the only athlete in Hamline history to earn first team honors for two straight years.  Benson also was named the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Senior Athlete of the Year this year.
Benson finished fourth in the all-around competition at the national gymnastics meet and also added a third place finish in the floor exercise and a sixth in the balance beam.  Last year Benson won a national title in the floor exercise.
The 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced on October 19th.
