The Winona County Sheriff's Department says a 50-year-old Elgin man was jailed Tuesday evening after he fled a deputy who was trying to stop him for a traffic violation.
Chief Deputy Ron Ganrude said Daniel Drake Gernes was spotted driving an ATV the ditch off Highway 61 the wrong way and when the officer tried to stop him Gernes fled along County 23 near Minnesota City.
The deputy finally caught up with Gernes after Gernes drove the ATV on some private property.
Turned out Gernes had no valid driver's license and no license plate on the ATV.
Gernes was being held in Winona because that incident may be a violation of his recent release on bond from a Rochester jail where he was cited with federal charges regarding the alleged delivery of some drugs to a Rochester address last fall. Officers at that time tailed him to the residence after receiving a tip from the Postal Service on the suspected drug delivery.
