Wisconsin Cheese

Wisconsin has kept its 1st place ranking as the nation's top cheese producing state.

The Department of Agriculture said Wisconsin produces 26 percent of the nation's cheese and was seeing growth in making of specialty brands.

Production of specialty cheese shot up 5 percent in 2013 to 640 million pounds, accounting for 22 percent of Wisconsin's cheese output.

National Agricultural Statistics Service said 93 of 126 cheese plants in Wisconsin manufactured at least one type of specialty cheese in 2013.

The Wisconsin Specialty Cheese Institute said the nature of special cheeses is derived from a number of unique factors led by high quality.
