Phone Scam

A new phone scam may be going around the area again.

A Rushford man says he was called twice Monday afternoon on his cell phone by someone claiming that he had won a new car in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. The caller instructed him to phone an 876-area code phone number to find out how to collect his prize.

Rocky Brand says when he called the number given, he was told it was a Jamaican phone number and that he would be charged international phone rates for the call. Brand hung up and reported the call to his phone company.

Anyone getting phone calls they suspect are scams are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement office and describe the call.
