Lewiston Fight

Authorities said a confrontation in a vacant Lewiston apartment Wednesday ended up with one man in the hospital, a second man in jail and two other men still under investigation.

Winona County Chief Deputy Ron Ganrude said 32-year-old Jacob Michael Loveless of Houston was jailed on preliminary felony charges of first degree assault, attempted third degree murder, and criminal vehicular operation after  a vehicle Loveless was driving in a chase from the apartment struck one of the other men  a 26-year-old Lewiston man, in a Lewiston alley.

That man, whose name was not released, was located outside the Lewiston elementary school when he fled the accident scene after being struck. The school went into a temporary lockdown. That man was transferred to a La Crosse hospital with serious injuries.

A third man, a 23-year-old from Houston, was injured at the apartment when he was apparently struck by a wooden closet pole. He refused treatment.

A fourth man, a 27-year-old from Minnesota City, has not been charged.

Ganrude said the pole was recovered by authorities and a gun from a crossbow was recovered at the accident scene.

Only the name of the man charged with a crime, Loveless, was released as the investigation continues.

Ganrude said authorities have not been able to discover the reason for the original apartment confrontation.
