The St. Charles City Council has approved a 2,300,000 referendum for the construction of a new building to house the city's fire department and ambulance service.
The building would replace the existing fire hall at the same location.
The St. Charles Press says the exact referendum amount would be dependent on how much, if any, assistance Winona County would provide.
Councilmembers went before the Winona County Board last week seeking a one million dollar loan to help finance the project. In exchange the city offered to allow the county to locate a backup dispatch center in the new building.
The County Board has made no decision on the loan request.
The newspaper said if the full 2.3 million dollars is approved by the voters it could cost property owners in the city an additional $70,000 a year on their tax bills.
The city asked the County Board for a decision on the possible loan in time to get the referendum on the November general election ballot.
