State Senator Matt Schmit of Red Wing received the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities' "Legislator of Distinction for Economic Development" Award at the group's summer conference in Rochester Thursday.

Although Schmit worked closely with coalition members on a number of initiatives during the 2014 legislative session, his successful push for improved broadband Internet access throughout rural Minnesota was recognized as the coalition's signature achievement at the Capitol.

Based upon legislation introduced by Schmit, the Legislature and Governor appropriated $20,000,000 to form Minnesota's new "Border-to-Border Broadband Fund," a competitive grant program aimed at promoting expansion of broadband Internet access in hard-to-serve areas across the state.

Schmit represent portions of Goodhue, Wabasha and Winona counties.
