Diocese Trial

The Catholic Diocese of Winona has filed an appeal of a judge's decision earlier this month to allow a sex abuse trial to remain in Ramsey County.
On August 4th, District Judge John Van de North denied the Winona Diocese's motion for a change of venue in the trial against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports attorneys for the local diocese, which is part of the lawsuit, said the Winona Diocese could not get a fair trial in Ramsey County because of the extensive media coverage and publicity.

The civil lawsuit was filed last year by an alleged victim of former priest Thomas Adamson. Adamson is accused of sexually abusing the victim at a church in the Twin Cities area. But he was also accused of abusing minors while working in the Winona Diocese in the 1970s. He was never charged in the local cases because the statute of limitations had run out.

The newspaper says the appeal came one day after Judge Van de North ruled that the trial could be moved from September 22nd to November 3rd.
