Hockey Arena Update
Mandated and needed upgrades to the Bud King Ice Arena could result in almost doubling the proposed 2015 property tax levy increase for Winona residents.
Mayor Mark Peterson told a Winona Radio audience the 1.4 million dollars for the arena project would be added to the 2.4 million dollar equipment bond issue in 2015 forcing the proposed property tax levy increase to go over 6-percent.
Peterson also says the city has little choice in making the changes.
The changes would include adding a new arena floor and were approved by the City Council this week during budget review sessions.
Peterson also said the city has an opportunity to get $200,000 from the state for the arena project.
Also approved were the purchase of two new fire department ladder trucks and a new roof on the Masonic Temple building in 2015.
The preliminary levy will be set in September and cannot be raised prior to final approval in December.
