Goodhue County authorities said an accident late Sunday afternoon on the Mississippi River in Red Wing left a barge worker badly hurt after he was crushed near Lock and Dam 3.
The man was crushed between a lock wall and barge when the water pushed it against him and airlifted to a Rochester hospital.
KTTC TV said 30-year-old Clayton Little, a deckhand from Reagan, Tennessee, was standing on a lock wall ladder waiting for a tugboat to pass through. That's when the barge moved too close and pushed up against him.
Little was able to climb out on his own.
The U.S. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers are helping the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office investigate the incident.
