Through last Thursday, Merchants Bank had collected 137,354 pounds of food for the "10 Days of Giving" Food Drive this year and was getting closer to 3-million pounds of food collected since the inception of the drive.
This year's totals include $64,794.50 in cash and 7,765 pounds of food. For purposes of the calculation, each dollar counts for two pounds of food. The "10 Days of Giving" is in its 28th year. Since its inception, 2,976,769 pounds of food have been collected.
Merchants will be collecting nonperishable food items at its locations as well as at schools and participating businesses around the area.
Food pickups will be conducted at over 30 area schools and businesses that have been taking part in the annual drive.
Final totals, which should take the drive over the 3-million pound mark, should be available late this week.....
