Stricter Mining Rules

Trempealeau County has stricter rules for mining in the county after a committee approved a new ordinance.

According to the Trempealeau County Times, the ordinance, adopted by the Environmental and Land Use Committee, requires mine operators to monitor wells and foundations of nearby buildings, and to reach an agreement on maintaining roads used for hauling. It also expands the buffer zone between mines and adjacent properties.

But not everyone was in favor of the changes. Some residents complained the new rules infringe on property rights and may violate the U-S Constitution. One man said he is working with the state on how to stop local restrictions on mining.....
