Barge traffic at the two Mississippi River locks in the Winona area was above the ten year averages according to the U-S Army Corps of Engineers.
Statistics show the Winona Lock and Dam 5-A saw 3,644 lockages for the 2016 season with the ten-year average at
Lock and Dam 5 at Minneiska saw 3,348 lockages compared to the ten-year average of 2,987.
Some 11.1 million tons of commodities were moved through both locks during the season, the highest amount since 2002.
Lock Six at Trempealeau saw 13.5 million tons of commodities move through in 2016, an indication that about two million tons were dropped off in Winona before towboats headed north or turned around and headed back south.....
