Winter Plowing

The Buffalo County Highway Department says winter maintenance crews will be out working on county trunk roads whenever snow and icing conditions warrant it.

The highway department wanted to clarify its winter maintenance policy to assure the public that trucks would respond to winter emergency conditions as needed.

Highway Commissioner Bob Platteter said the department's general winter maintenance policy has been the same for many years, but some adjustment was made for the current winter season.

General maintenance hours for county highway crews runs from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.

He noted that not all state highways are maintained around the clock in Buffalo County, adding that the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation sets the standard times for each section of state highway.

He added that State Highway 54 to the interstate bridge at Winona and south on 35/54 in the town of Buffalo is considered a 24-hour state section that is more heavily maintained.

Platteter said the highway department believes that Buffalo County ranks near the top when it comes to winter travel conditions on its roadways.
