The Wanek family, founders and owners of Ashley Furniture Industries in Arcadia, has contributed to a 50-million dollar funding program that hopes to cure type one diabetes in six years.
The undisclosed donation was made to the City of Hope in Duarte, California, an independent research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.
Ashley CEO, Todd Wanek, speaking on behalf of his family, said the Waneks are extremely confident City of Hope is the institution that will fund a cure for the more than one million Americans who battle diabetes disease every day.
The fund is being led by the Wanek Family and is in addition to gifts from an anonymous donor and corporate and foundations across the country.
City of Hope will will be able to devote more than 50-million dollars over the next six years to an innovative research effort, called the Wanek Family Project Type One Diabetes, that seeks to find a cure. Research results may also benefit the larger Type 2 Diabetes population.....
