The U-S Army Corps of Engineers will begin taking its annual measurements of the ice on Lake Pepin on Wednesday, February 15th.
The measurements are taken at several different locations between Reeds Landing and the north end of the lake. The measurements are used to help river shipping companies determine when the first towboats of the season will try to make it through the lake and into St. Paul to begin the shipping season.
The earliest opening on record is March 3rd. However, the average date is March 24th.
Last year the Motor Vessel Ronald Wagonblast was the first to make it through the lake on March 13th.
The first towboats to arrive in Winona mark the opening of the Winona commercial harbor.....
