A 48-year-old Sparta, Wisconsin man was jailed after he allegedly tried to use an unusual scheme to purchase an expensive item at the Winona Mills Fleet Farm Store.
Police said Brian Wayne Matteau took a picture of the bar code on an item valued at almost $40 and sent the picture to a printer in his pocket. He then placed the printed phony bar code on a tent that was priced at $589 and attempted to purchase the tent at the cheaper price.
It didn't work
Police said a loss prevention employee tried to apprehend Matteau but he fled on foot out the store. Matteau was apprehended by an officer called to the scene.
Matteau was initially charged with two counts of theft, possession of burglary tools, fifth degree possession of a controlled substance, and introducing contraband to the Winona County Jail
During the booking procedure officers turned up a little over one gram of methamphetamine in Matteau's possession.
