The City of Winona and volunteers, with support from a Super Bowl LII Urban Forestry Grant and Tree Trust, will plant 50 trees this Saturday, Oct. 7th. The trees will replace ash trees in Unity and Lake Parks being lost to the emerald ash borer infestation.
To join this effort, please sign up at https://tinyurl.com/winonatrees. Work will begin at 9:45 am this Sat. Oct 7th and will include information on the Emerald Ash borer and proper tree planting techniques. Volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
The Lake Park area includes over 200 maintained ash trees, or about 1 in every 6 shade trees in the park. Nearly half of the park’s ash trees are treated to protect against the borer for the next year, but many others are already dead or showing symptoms of the borer.
The NFL has included environmental projects into the management of every Super Bowl for the past 25 years. With Minnesota hosting the game in January, the Super Bowl Host Committee, Verizon and Andersen Corp. are providing grants such as the one being used this Saturday to benefit the state's environment.
