Winona-Solar Power

The city of Winona will soon be getting a large portion of its power using solar energy.

Winona’s City Council voted unanimously Monday to enter into a contract with SolarStone Partners for a subscription with a yet-to-be-built community solar garden.

The negotiations have been ongoing since August. The company is hoping to break ground in March or April and be running by August 2018.

By the terms of the agreement, the city will get about 40 percent of its energy from the solar garden for the next 25 years at a price of 13 cents per kilowatt hour. That is around 2 million kilowatt hours of the city’s annual approximate 5 million kilowatt hours used.
Altogether the plan is estimated to save $1.9 million over the 25-year contract length.
